URBAN SYMPOSIUM 2009
ABSTRACTS DUE: May 17, 2009 
 

EVENT: The Urban Symposium 2009 will be the first annual student conference focusing on urban development hosted by the Graduate Program in International Affairs. Eighteen students will present papers on a range of political, social and economic issues affecting urban development. Panels will be moderated by distinguished faculty from the New School and NYC community. The intent of the annual conference is to provide a platform for students to present dynamic research and to foster dialogue on the compelling urban issues of the 21st century.

PAPER COMPETITION: 18 papers will be selected to present at the Urban Symposium (Fall 2009) and will be published on the Urban Symposium website.  Of that selection, three will be chosen for best papers:
* 1st prize: $250
* 2nd prize: $150
* 3rd prize: $100

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: GPIA students and all students participating in the summer International Field Programs are invited to submit abstracts for the paper contest.  Abstracts should address one of the following panel topics:
* Promoting Social Equity and Inclusiveness in the City
* Sustainable Solutions for Urban Development: Insights and Strategies from Developing Countries
* Globalization and the City
* Multilateral Interventions in Urban Development: Assessing the Impact of Donor Assistance
* Beyond the Central City: Urban Processes in the Metropolitan Area
* The State of the World’s Cities: Regional Perspectives
