International Economic and Financial Policy Discussions at the UN

Organization: United Nations (UN)
Semester: Spring 2011

This project would providing substantive backstopping on selected international economic policy issues and possibly on questions of reform of the international "architecture" of global economic governance (role of UN, Bretton Woods institutions, World Trade Organization, Group of 20, etc.) as they are being debated by governments at the UN. It is not clear at this moment who the "client" will be or the specific topics, as they are in part contingent on negotiations currently underway at the UN.

Two previous PIA projects will give a sense of the level of analysis and the type of audience that previous such projects have sought to address: one in Spring 2009 for the Non-Governmental Liaison Service at the UN that in part gathered views from civil society for the Stiglitz Commission on the global finance crisis and reform of the international financial system (http://www.gpia.info/node/2316), and one in Spring 2008 for the NGO Committee on Financing for Development that reviewed international agreements and disagreements and suggested advocacy positions that NGOs might take on selected policy areas that were expected to feature in the end-2008 Doha intergovernmental conference on financing for development (http://www.gpia.info/node/2059).

It is expected that GPIA students will prepare a joint paper or papers on policy issues in one or more topics and make a presentation to the client (as the deliverable). During the semester they will contact experts within and outside the UN and do desk research on the issues chosen, as well as meet periodically with their client. They should be able to get passes to attend intergovernmental meetings during the semester when their issues are discussed.

Barry Herman will be faculty supervisor for this Practicum.
