Communications Intern 

BACKGROUND:

The Women's Refugee Commission advocates vigorously for laws, policies and programs to improve the lives and protect the rights of refugee and internally displaced women, children and young people—bringing about lasting, measurable change.

The Women’s Refugee Commission was established in 1989 to address the particular needs of refugee and displaced women and children. The Women's Refugee Commission is affiliated with and is legally part of the International Rescue Committee, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. It does not receive direct financial support from the IRC.

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP:

The intern will provide overall support to the Women's Refugee Commission’s communications department. She/he will work with the director of communications and the communications officer. The internship will provide the opportunity to work closely with communications staff and attend internal organizational meetings and other meetings and events related to refugee issues.

SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES:

1. Write, edit and update copy for the website and blog.
2. Research other websites for innovative ideas.
3. Organize logistics for lectures and other events.
4. Write and edit copy for print materials as needed.
5. Source and obtain permission for photographs and music for use in Women’s Refugee Commission multimedia projects.

REQUIREMENTS:

• College or graduate student with communications, international relations, film or public relations background or interest.
• Excellent writing and editing skills.
• Excellent research, data collection and analysis skills.
• Excellent communications skills.
• Web- and media-related experience a plus, including Joomla.
• Must be willing to do administrative tasks.

 

Reports to: Program Officer, Communications

Location: New York, NY
Timeframe: September – December (negotiable), 10 - 20 hours a week
