Alia Nankoe

Alia Nankoe has been teaching at the Graduate Program in International Affairs at the New School since 2008. She teaches practice-based classes on international program development for humanitarian crisis and development settings. For a decade she worked on different types of development and humanitarian processes for various UN agencies ranging from headquarter-based policy development and field assistance, to operations and system strengthening, as well as direct field assistance. She has coordinated trainings sessions for UN, inter-governmental and nongovernmental organizations, and academic professionals in different parts of the world, and leads an International Field Program in Senegal in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund, Cheikh Anta Diop University, and GPIA. She worked for IOM, UNAIDS, UNHCR and UNAIDS in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Europe.

 

Two highlights of Alia's career experience include:

Ø    Helping to coordinate and respond to the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami in Indonesia's devastated Aceh province.

Ø    Conceptualizing and organizing a Pan-African Film Festival on "Les Violences qui Nous Affectent" (The Kinds of Violence that Affect Us), which sought to raise awareness on violence against women and children. Due to its tremendous success across Africa this Film Festival was held again in subsequent years and the films continued traveling into the provinces and villages, as part of a national campaign to mobilize people against the various forms of violence in communities.
