The Observatory on Latin America and the Consulate of Venezuela invite you to a talk given by Ambassador Bernardo Alvarez Herrera. Ambassador Alvarez Herrera will be discussing his career as an Ambassador to the U.S., a position which he has held since 2003 as well as incorporating his experience as the Former Vice-Minister of Petroleum. Through his long experience of public policy he will discuss his views on contemporary opportunities and challenges in U.S. - Venezuelan Foreign Policy.
Bernardo Alvarez Herrera became ambassador of Venezuela to the United States on Jan. 27, 2003. Ambassador Alvarez previously served as vice minister of hydrocarbons (2000-03) and director-general of hydrocarbons (1999-2000) at the Ministry of Energy and Mines, director of cooperation at the Universidad Central de Venezuela (1993-94), executive secretary and Venezuelan representative for the Forum on Debt and Development (1988-91), and chief of the Research and Development Division at the Venezuelan Institute of Foreign Trade (1986-87). He has also been a professor at the School of Political and Administrative Studies at the Universidad Central de Venezuela since 1982 and has held numerous positions within the university as well. Ambassador Alvarez holds a degree in political science from the Universidad Central de Venezuela and a master's degree in development studies from the University of Sussex, England.
Ambassador Alvarez spoke at The New School in 2006, his presentation is included in the edited volume by the OLA Latin America on the Move: The Post Neo-Liberal Transition, in which his essay "Venezuela: Towards a new political framework for a participatory democracy" was published in 2007 (Ediciones Infinito).
