India China Institute cordially invites you to a lecture entitled, "The Community Building Movement in Urban China" by esteemed ICI fellow Dr. Yan Ming.
Dr Yan Ming is an Associate Professor from the Institute of Sociology and Center for Social Policy Studies, at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. She received her doctorate in sociology from New York University.
Dr. YAN is an expert on China's social transformation in the contemporary period from both historical and sociological perspectives. She has recently done ethnographic research on how the costs of development have altered the lives of individuals and families in a low-income neighborhood in Beijing. In her lecture, Dr. YAN will present an examination into the evolution of urban neighborhood organization in China through tracing the social and policy backgrounds that have influenced this evolution. Through a discussion of the redefined role and functions of the urban neighborhood organization, she will analyze the way in which these changes have strained relations with the government and local societies.
Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the New School for Social Research, Vyjayanthi Rao, will be the discussant for the evening.
Please arrive early as seating is limited.
