Finding durable solutions for the millions of refugees in the world today presents a critical challenge for the international community. The ability to effectively handle such situations has ramifications for peace and security, human rights, and economic development. the three primary strategies for dealing with refugee populations are: repartition, resettlement, and naturalization. These options will be explored by our panel of experts

Speakers:

Mrs. Kafanabo: Mrs Kafanabo is the Tanzanian Minister Plenipotentiary for Armed Conflict, Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Tanzania has recently completed massive repatriation efforts with the help of UNHCR. Mrs. Kafanabo's presentation will focus on that process.

Mr. Jacob Massaquoi: Mr. Massaquoi is a human rights activist and founder of African Refuge in Staten Island, NY. Mr. Massaquoi, a Liberian, was forced to flee his country when civil war broke out in 1989 and will speak on refugee resettlement.

 

Mr. Graeme Rodgers: Mr. Rodgers is a consultant with Displacement and Resettlement Analysis South Africa and Research Associate at Oxford University's Refugee Studies Center. Mr. Rogers' presentation will focus on local integration issues.

Ms. Olivia Bueno: Ms. Bueno is the International Refugee Rights Initiative's Associate Director and was previously Program at Human Rights First. Ms. Bueno's presentation will focus on issues facing repatriated refugees in Burundi.
