The New School Graduate Program in International Affairs

Taken in the desert town of Hawzen, about 50km from Mekele in the northern Tigray region of Ethiopia. The picture is of a young girl that was so fascinated with me and my camera. She came with a group of friends trying to sell me shells she had collected. She was covered by her flowery black shawl. After talking with her for a few minutes she slowly opens her flower shawl and gives me a big smile. (I was amazed at how the children could cover up and go barefoot in the desert. That day the temperature was over 103 degrees.)<br />
