Mirjana Milanovi? is an urban planner working in Amsterdam City Planning Office, and since 1996 the project leader of the Project Bureau Ijburg. From 1999-2002 she also led the design and planning team for the Steigereiland Island Project (2000 apartments). She has published books on urban typology and development and also on housing typologies. She lectures internationally on her work and the complex issues facing contemporary urbanism.

IJburg is the biggest project of housing construction in Amsterdam. On seven new islands, more than 18,000 flats and more than 250,000 square meters of business buildings of cultural and educational purpose are under construction. The project is divided into two phases. In the first phase, islands of Steigereiland, Rieteiland and Haveneiland have been constructed. Filling with sand for the construction of these islands started in 1999, while the first flats were inhabited in 2002. By mid 2008, about 4,000 flats were completed in IJburg, while another two thousand flats are under currently construction.
