NEWARK GREENWALK AND DESIGN CHARETTE
Parsons The New School for Design
Date/Time: Saturday, April 18, 9am-6pm
Location: Riviera Café, Ferry Street, Newark
Sponsored by The Ironbound Community Corporation and The New School Design and Social Science Fund
In the fall of 2008, The New School students, Newark's Ironbound Community Corporation and East Ferry Street neighborhood residents conducted a field survey, analysis and focus group on how to create a safe pedestrian access for East Ferry Street residents to the Ironbound Recreation Center and stores, especially the Pathmark further west on Ferry Street. Currently, residents navigate a partially vacant former industrial area: children, for example, must cross a railroad crossing and jug-handle road under the routes 1 and 9 overpass at the entry to a large metal recycling facility in order to access to the Ironbound Center.
The New School faculty and students are invited to join a meeting and charette on April 11, when these partners will meet again to strategize on creating a pedestrian access plan to serve the needs for the coming recreation and walking season.
