Organizational Assessment

Organization: Consortium for Haitian Empowerment
Team: Johnny Celestin
Supervisor: Mark Johnson
Semester: Fall 2005

Background:

  • Founded in 2001, the Consortium for Haitian Empowerment (CHE) was launched by the Birdge Project when four Haitian organizations joined the National Coalition to assess and address the impact of September 11th on the New York City Haitian community.
  • The result of a subsequent survery led to the realization that agencies needed to combine their efforts to better coordinate and improve service delivery.  Because of this analysis CHE was formally incorporated as a 501 c3 organizations.
  • CHE's mission is to improve the quality of life and opportunities for Haitian- Americans in the New York regions through advocacy and social justice, economic development, civic engagement, capacity and coalition building.

Project Objective:

The Consortium for Haitian Empowerment (CHE) launched a semi- strategic planning process in the fall of 2005 to answer a number of critical questions currently facing the organization.

  • What will be its growth strategy and development in the coming years?
  • How can the agency better serve its client members?
  • How will the funding mix and limitations impact future programs?
  • Given its missions, what potential new services should the agency provide?

To answer these questions the agency partners with a graduate student from the New Shool International Affairs program to assess the following:

  • Leadership and governance
  • Emerging themes and program opportunities
  • Funding
