Team: Heather Higle
Supervisor: Mark Johnson
Semester: Fall 2006

Information about de institution

Fundeso is a private non-profit organization that acts as a non governmental organization for development –NGOD- non religious related, non-political and independent.

Fundeso works to build a more human and more just world through programs of sustainable and integral development which involve the strengthening of the civil society in Latin America, Africa and Asia. Fundeso also carries out projects of consciousness-raising of the Spanish society against inequalities.

The mission of Fundeso is to fight against poverty and unfairness in the world, to promote human progress, both economic and social, and to create programs that make sustainable development possible in the developing countries, allowing local populations to play the main role in these projects.

Fundeso also promotes awareness and cooperation programs in Spain, to ensure citizens are aware of the existing inequality in the world and assume active responsibility in order to face such concerns.

Basic criteria of operation

As has already been said, Fundeso works on the basis of recognizing that citizens from the South are agents of their own development. Therefore, all of Fundeso’s programs have, as a central idea, the strengthening of the civil society as the best guarantee of democratic structures and social fairness.

This transversal central concept functions in several ways across the entire project operating levels in which Fundeso is involved. These include Development, Education and Co-development.

The Development Programs have three operating lines:

  • Production Development: agricultural and urban, promotion of micro-business, professional training, etc.
  • Environmental Development: Integration of local communities in the environmental conservation process.
  • Development of basic infrastructures for the community: water, housing, health, education, etc.

The Education Programs have three operating lines:

  • Education in the formal and non-formal values of civilized society.
  • Awakening and awareness of the public opinion.
  • Promoting volunteer work.

Co-development Programs have two operating lines:

  • New perception of migration as phenomena to be managed and not as “problem to resolve”.
  • Promotion of the immigrant as an Agent of Development.

Fundeso ensures that each program relies on its best capacity and technical knowledge. Fundeso assumes commitment for the success of each project, so as to guarantee its impact, efficiency and sustainability.

Strategic Vision

Fundeso looks for the mobilization of all social sectors, in Spain as well as in the countries where the projects are being carried out, maximising the energy of the society of each country and ensuring local involvement and ownership.

Looking to strengthen the civil society, Fundeso tries to give people the chance to progress by promoting self-development mechanisms, which do not mean the classic concept of social assistance that generates dependency in the long run. Fundeso is aware that helping the growth of small producers in the economy has an impact that goes further than economic development.

Fundeso understands that a real development process has to incorporate businessmen at its different levels. To achieve this Fundeso seeks to increase the corporate social responsibility of the Spanish businessmen investing in developing countries.
