Gold mining is conducted in two primary ways: industrially, or on a large scale, and artisanally, or on a small scale. Every year, for tiny amounts of gold, mountains of rock are moved, millions of people are exposed to unsafe work environments, and tons of pollution is released into the air and water. Irresponsible gold mining's bottom line is comprised of the billions of dollars the industry generates every year. But at what cost? And what are the alternatives?
