One of the most important developments in jurisprudence in the past two decades has been the proliferation of international criminal tribunals, beginning with the establishment of the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and for Rwanda (ICTY and ICTR) and culminating with the inauguration of the International Criminal Court in 2003.
Larry Johnson, former United Nations Assistant Secretary General for Legal Affairs, will deliver a series of three talks exploring the evolution of international criminal justice. Prior to his position as Assistant Secretary General, Mr. Johnson served as the Legal Adviser of the International Atomic Energy Agency (1997-2001) and Chef de Cabinet, Office of the President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (2003-2005). He is a former professor of Global Affairs at New York University and Visiting Professor of International Law at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University.
Each of Mr. Johnson's presentations will focus on a specific tribunal. The functioning (or non-functioning) of each tribunal will be illustrated with reference to a particular case that appeared before it. The tribunals discussed will be the ICTY, the Special Tribunal for Lebanon and the Special Court for Sierra Leone.
