Prof. Philip Dmitrov will discuss the Transatlantic link, further E.U. enlargement, and U.S.-Russia tensions. Prof. Dmitrov's presentation will be followed by a question and answer session moderated by Michaela Hertkorn, Professor of European Studies, New School Graduate Program in International Affairs.
Philip Dimitrov was Prime Minister of the first democratically elected government in Bulgaria after the fall of Communism in the 1990's and then Ambassador of Bulgaria to the United States from 1998 to 2002. He served as Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs in the European Parliament in 2007. He is now a visiting professor at Christopher Newport University in Virginia. In 1999, he received the Truman - Reagan Freedom Award for his contributions to overcoming Communism around the world. Dimitrov is a member of the International Committee for Democracy in Cuba and a member of the Club of Madrid, an organization of Former Heads of State and Government with the goal of promoting democracy worldwide. He is the author of The New Democracies and the Transatlantic Link (2004) and The Myths of Bulgarian Transition (2003).
Admission is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and on a first come, first serve basis.
