Tackling Child Poverty in the Twenty-first Century

 Wednesday 8 February 2012

4pm to 6.15pm

The New School, Bark Orientation Room 101
2 West 13th Street, New York, NY 10011

At this invitation-only event, senior researchers from Young Lives at the University of Oxford will present the latest thinking and findings from their groundbreaking study.  A facilitated discussion will enable the invited audience of policymakers and practitioners to engage in-depth with the research findings and their implications for tackling childhood poverty.  The session is hosted at The New School in partnership with Rutgers University and City University of New York (CUNY).

Young Lives is a longitudinal study of 12,000 children from Ethiopia, India, Peru and Vietnam conducted by University of Oxford over a period of 15 years.  It was established to improve understanding of the causes and consequences of child poverty and to examine how policies affect children's well-being.

This period has been one of dynamic change and rapid growth in all four countries.  Issues of persistent inequality and child poverty in the current environment of growth and of economic liberalisation are further highlighted against the backdrop of the current financial crisis.

The Millennium Declaration issued by the United Nations in 2000 identified poverty reduction as a main development goal for the twenty-first century.  More specific goals and targets were set by the international community in 2002, focusing on universal primary education, gender equality, health, environmental sustainability and the eradication of hunger.
