International Field Program Spring 2010 Seminar
(Syllabus)
NINT 5900
Section E: Nepal, Wednesday 6:00-7:50 pm, Room A-601
The goal of the International Field Program Spring Seminar is to prepare you for your summer field and academic experience such that you arrive feeling organized and confident, and you leave feeling you made the most of the experience. We will try to familiarize you with the context in which you will be living and working; discuss the country's history, culture and politics; and review your proposed work on the ground. The seminars will include skills workshops, simulations, speakers, films and readings.
Successful completion of the IFP Spring Seminar is a prerequisite to participate in the IFP Summer Session. This will be determined by:
- Attendance at all seminars.
- Reading all material.
- Active participation in discussions.
- Attendance at and participation in skills workshops, simulations, and IFP events.
- Completion of Country Briefing, Terms of Reference for internship and Research Proposal for summer.
Absences must be approved by the Faculty Country Coordinator.
Readings:
- Students are expected to have read Manjushree Thapa's Forget Kathmandu (copies will be distributed on Session 1- Seminar 1) and come prepared to discuss the text on the first day of class (January 26th 2010)
- Students are encouraged to access/visit the following websites:
Online newspapers:

Assignments:
l Students are expected to review the potential internship organizations and applied research sites in Nepal-NGOs and INGOs (names are listed at the back of this syllabus). Two options are available for students enrolled in the IFP in Nepal: 1) organizational approach- students identify a particular organization for their summer internship; OR b) applied research or thematic approach-students identify a particular research topic and intern with one or more relevant organizations.
l Based on each student's background experience and research interest, they are to submit a short report on the first class meeting (January 26th 2010). It can be an outline of the field project that each student anticipates to undertake during their summer internship/applied research in Nepal in Summer 2010. It must consist of a rationale for the project and a bibliographic survey (or annotated bibliography) outlining the following: a) broader theoretical framework and orientation-- scholarly debate that the project engages with and/or builds upon; b) historically specific context of Nepal; c) key Nepali and non-Nepali scholars/individuals involved on the ground; and d) the role(s) of key local/national/international Organizations. This allows students the opportunity to brainstorm ideas and begin thinking through some of the preliminary questions and conceptual frameworks. Students will continue to revisit/revise this paper throughout the semester as they gain more knowledge and background on Nepali society and politics
