Re: Media and Culture Spring 2008 Wrap-up

April 23, 2008

The Media & Culture Concentration was quite busy this semester. From Craig Unger's discussion on the Bush administration to Barbara Crossette's views on the press and its relationship with international organizations to Amar Bakshi's presentation on how the world sees America, there was no shortage of opportunities for thought-provoking discussions. Additionally, Robert Cottrell's excellent workshop series on "The Death of Journalism?" provided great insights into the world of professional journalism and into how it has been changing under the pressures of globalization and new technology. For a complete list of this Spring's Media & Culture events, please visit our Events page.

Many of the issues discussed in Mr. Cottrell's workshops will be present in this Fall's "New Media and Global Affairs" class, taught by Laura Forlano. This is just one of the many new course offerings for the Fall, which also includes a new course taught by Peter Lucas on "Global Youth Media." Many students expressed interest in this subject during the Concentration’s meeting on February 7th so we're happy to add it to our expanding list of options. And as always, students will have the opportunity to take cross-listed courses in the New School's Media Studies program, which now include several Methods courses. For a full list of Fall 2008 courses, please visit our Curriculum page.

While we've been very busy this semester, we are always working to improve the concentration. But we need your help and input! At the Spring 2008 meeting on February 7th, there was an emphasis placed on the need for student collaboration and discussion -- a conversation was started in the Media & Culture Discussion Group but we'd like to hear from more (if not all) of you! Please sign up for the Discussion Group if you haven't done so yet and let's keep talking as we think about what we'd like to do in the Fall. Remember, this concentration is yours to do with it what you wish.

Lastly, we’re happy to unveil our newly-revamped Concentration page? Got any suggestions on how we can improve it? Let us know. We're always waiting to hear from you.

Enjoy the Summer break and see you in the Fall!
