Foreign Languages @ The New School

The Department of Foreign Languages at The New School offers courses in 17 languages spoken in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas that may be taken by current GPIA students without charge. These courses do not carry academic credit and are not graded, but do appear on student transcripts as audits.

The Foreign Language Department is composed of experienced language teachers, most of whom are native speakers. Our teaching philosophy is to focus on the living language in its cultural context and our goal is to help our students to communicate in the target language as soon as possible.  Our classes are small so that every student has the opportunity to participate actively in class activities.  We offer courses for absolute beginners, as well as for students at the intermediate and advanced levels, and all our courses are taught entirely in the target language.

How do I register for Language Courses?

You may register for language courses after you have registered for GPIA courses, in five steps:

1.  View the Spring 2012 course schedules.

2.  Make an appointment with Chrissy Roden, the Assistant Director of Academic Student Services in the Dean's Office of The New School for Public Engagement, (212) 229-5615, email rodenc@newschool.edu, 66 W. 12th St. 3rd floor.  The Assistant Director will issue a Fee Waiver form.

3.  Take this form to the Registration Office at 72 5th Avenue.

Don't miss out! Register early as some courses get canceled due to insufficient enrollment

(Note: if you register for a language course during the summer session and you are not also registered for a GPIA course, you will need to pay the student fees associated with registration. For information about the student fee, contact Chrissy Roden, the Assistant Director of Academic Student Services. Also, you cannot register for a foreign language course until they register for their courses in your grad programs.)
