IFP 2009 Ethiopia
US nationals require a passport and a visa for travel to Ethiopia:
Tourist visas can be obtained on arrival and are valid for three months; in some cases a business visa can also be obtained on arrival, but it is best to organize this in advance.
Visitors should obtain a visa from an Ethiopian Embassy or Mission in advance of arrival by filling out the visa application form (Click here to download), and submitting payment in the form of a money order to the Embassy or Mission based upon the type of visa being requested.
Some tourist visas can also be issued on arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, for which a different form is provided. The form available on this website and from the Ethiopian Embassy in London cannot be used for this purpose.
Tourist visas can only be issued on arrival to:
- foreign nationals who are coming from countries where there is no Ethiopian Mission
- foreign nationals who are coming from and are permanent residents in any of the following internationally recognised tourist-generating countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea Republic, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russian Federation, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States.
If applying for a tourist visa on arrival, visitors will need to bring with them two recent passport-sized photographs and no less than US $20 before their application can be processed.
Those using mail services to receive their visas should include an envelope with a return address and sufficient pre-paid postage in addition to their completed visa application form and money order payment.
