International Conference

"RETHINKING POVERTY: MAKING POLICIES THAT WORK FOR CHILDREN"
The New School, Theresa Lang Center, 55 W. 13th Street, NYC
April 21-23, 2008

What: UNICEF and The Graduate Program in International Affairs (GPIA) at The New School will be jointly hosting a conference at The New School, in New York, on rethinking poverty, focusing on policies that work for children, on April 21-23, 2008. This is the fourth international conference on "Children's Rights and Policies" organized in partnership by UNICEF and the GPIA. Past conferences held in 2004, 2005 and 2006 covered a wide range of topics researched and presented by 100 experts from nearly 50 countries around the world. In each case, policies for enhancing child rights and policies/programs for children and families wellbeing were central to discussion by the hundreds of conference participants. The aim of the 2008 Conference is to mobilize the agenda on child poverty and disparity.

Why: 2000's Conference and its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) marked an international commitment to eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, and to fostering global collaboration. Despite some progress towards the MDGs targets, millions of children remain outside of the policy agenda.

How: The Conference will create a space for peer consultation among UNICEF international staff, New School faculty and students, academic and research institutions across the globe, NGO practitioners, and other external experts. In keeping with the school's mission, the Conference will also present the opportunity for practitioners, scholars, members of the public and policy makers to meet and examine the impact of ensuring the fulfillment of children's rights, discuss lessons learned for future action, and increase the wellbeing of children worldwide. Finally, the Conference will provide input and feedback to UNICEF's Global Study on "Child Poverty and Social Disparities," which is currently being carried out in 40 countries (for more information, please see http://www.unicefglobalstudy.blogspot.com/).
