Scenarios for journalism in 2018:
(i) "It was all a bad dream". The resurgence of traditional media.
(ii) "Blogland". The triumph of new media, but suppporting serious journalism.
(iii) "Twittered away". The triumph of new media, but racing for the bottom.
Robert Cottrell is deputy editor of Economist.com, the online arm of The Economist. He was previously a foreign correspondent in Asia and Europe, for The Economist and the Financial Times. He also writes regularly for The Spectator of London, and for the New York Review of Books.
