Another Look

Participatory photography project with the International
Field Program of the Graduate Program in
International Affairs at the New School

Self Portrait. By Fabiola BerdielFear - Another typical day of trying to get to class. By KristinaAnother Look is intended as an introduction to the power of participatory photography as a tool for personal empowerment and social change.

This project is based on the fundamental right of all individuals, irrespective of age, gender, race or wealth, ability, religion or political affiliations to be able to access tools and skills through which they can find strength in their own voices and the means to represent themselves. The project also works to invert the power paradigm of traditional photojournalism which, although seeking to raise awareness in order to effect change, is still a process enacted more often than not by ‘outsiders'.

Seven GPIA students facilitated photography workshops with youth and adult participants in their summer IFPs. Ten participants in each country used disposable cameras to photograph images representing their hopes/dreams and fears/concerns, as well as shooting self/peer portraits.

The Studley Fellows attended training sessions in April and were asked to conduct the same photo assignment with disposable cameras that they will give their local workshop participants. We plan on organizing an exhibition with the photographs produced in all countries and we hope to make this an ongoing project for future IFPs.
